Re: $5.00 Gold Half Eagles Indian
For pre-1933 coins:
A $20 coin has .96750 oz. pure gold. A $5 coin has 1/4 the gold of the $20 gold coin (1/4 the face value, 1/4 the gold). So just divide .96750 by 4. If by size you mean the dimensions: 8.359 grams 21.6 mm diameter. Thickness doesn't seem to be specified. But using the density of gold and copper (90% gold@19.32g/cc + 10% copper@8.94g/cc = 18.28g/cc), thickness is about 1.25mm. |

Beautiful coins! If you intend on purchasing raw coins, i.e. not graded and slabbed, I suggest you buy this book
Best book I have purchased for detecting counterfeit gold coins, especially indian heads. I believe it was Lebanon who made thousands of counterfeits, but they were used as jewelry, but many have come back to the US as counterfeits, selling for big numismatic premiums. I have save myself a few hundred dollars because of this book. I loaned it to my dealer, matter of fact, he still has it, but it has saved him thousands. The counterfeits are gold, just not made by the US mint and the striking quality is not as good. The Great Ag |

They're beautiful coins, but anymore I only buy for gold content. You can get a sovereign for about $50-60 less. Personally, I'd go with the sovereign.
